Co:Motion's second release, 'Things in Life,' comes from Shanghai sleeper talent Michael Cignarale. Graphic designer by day, at night he's a studio wizard with many hats: disco diva, house head and techno fiend rolled into one. These aspects shine through in his productions, at once tough and pretty, detailed and raw.
The title track is a slice of house class, shuffling and string-driven with a a forward momentum that has propelled our dancefloors, smiling, to another level - flirting with anthem status while still keeping a sense of restraint. Resident wild card Laura Ingalls beefs things up into a techier, percussive roller that splinters the original's strings into rave stabs simmering with peak-time intensity.
The second track, 'Comfort Food' sees Cignarale collaborating with Ingalls on a jacking techno workout. Ingalls' raw aesthetic leaves its mark, with slamming drums and an upfront groove. From the foundation of its lush, deep lead, the track builds with manic intensity as layers of sizzling hats and tribal echoes join the fray.
MIIIA's dub remix of 'Comfort Food' sees the Canadian-Chinese producer exploring trippier territory, employing an ambling groove that catches its balance in all the right places amidst submerged chanting and eerie pads as it evolves into one of her most focused and subtle productions to date. Watch out for more original tracks by her in this vein in 2016.
